About FASO: From Symposium to Action

The Future Accountant Sponsoring Organizations (FASO) emerged from the Future Accountancy Stakeholder Symposium held in September 2023. This symposium brought together key players in the accounting profession to address critical challenges in the field, with a particular focus on strengthening the accounting talent pipeline. The original Symposium was co-hosted by the American Accounting Association and the National Association of Black Accountants.

Sponsoring Organizations

FASO is a committee, operating as an unincorporated joint venture, sponsored by a number of stakeholders in the United States, the American Accounting Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the California Society of CPAs, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), and PwC.

Since its inception, FASO has coordinated four working groups addressing: (1) the Principles of Accounting course, (2) outreach and support for community college students, (3) engagement with high school students and teachers, and (4) rebranding the accounting profession to appeal to future accountants. FASO’s purpose is to facilitate and support the initiatives of the working groups to effect increases in the enrollments in college accounting programs, and ultimately, increase the number of graduates entering the profession of accounting, broadly defined. Their commitment underscores the importance of this collaborative approach in addressing industry-wide challenges.

Working Groups

Several specialized working groups emerged from the Symposium, each focusing on specific aspects of the accounting pipeline:

  • Principles Working Group: This group is conducting in-depth interviews to gather insights on accounting principles and their application in education and practice. Their work aims to bridge gaps between academic teaching and real-world application by widely disseminating best practices to all types of accounting faculty.
  • High School Working Group: This group is dedicated to engaging high school students and teachers to promote accounting as an exciting and rewarding career path. They are developing strategies to introduce accounting concepts earlier in students' educational journeys as well as assist in getting more resources and information to HS teachers.
  • Community College Working Group: Focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities in community college accounting education, this group is working to strengthen the role of community colleges in the accounting pipeline. They are exploring mentorship programs, resource collection, and the possibility of more internship opportunities for community college students.
  • Branding Group: This group has been assisting in compiling and curating an inventory of resources for educators, students, and caregivers, while also working to disseminate existing resources more widely. This work forms the backbone of FASO's knowledge-sharing initiatives.
